Teo Chee Hean, Chief Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Government of Singapore

In a keynote address during International Cyber Security Week in Singapore on October 19, Teo Chee Hean, Chief Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, announced the formation of a key inter-agency task force to combat the growing threats of ransomware in business, research, and educational institutions.

The Counter Ransomware Task Force (CRTF) will help all organizations strengthen their own defenses against cyber threats. The minister discussed the various ways the Singapore government contributes to cybersecurity.

“The government is also helping companies to strengthen their cybersecurity. For example, CSA launched the SG Cyber Safe program in 2021 with a cybersecurity certification program, including the Cyber Essentials and Cyber Trust marks, to set standards and recognize companies that have good practices in cybersecurity,” Teo said in the statement. Singapore International Cybersecurity Week marks the government’s efforts to strengthen cybersecurity policies.

He also discussed the growing importance of cyberspace and the need to strengthen international cooperation on cybersecurity, with ransomware forming a significant part of cyberattack activities.

Regarding the plea to focus on fighting ransomware, he continued, “Ransomware criminals can be opportunistic and very sophisticated. They take advantage of poor cybersecurity practices to gain access to their victims’ systems and data, gamble that victim organizations are more willing to pay the ransom and hide the attack than report the crime, and take advantage of loopholes between jurisdictions to evade law enforcement. .”

The country’s main areas of focus are protection of digital information infrastructure, national infrastructure, critical information infrastructure, and overall best practices for system and device usage. .
