The Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Friday agreed to take joint action by member states to counter threats posed by international terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan.
Sources said, “Joint measures by relevant authorities of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states to counter the challenges of threats posed by international terrorist organizations from the territory of Afghanistan have been approved.
According to sources, the decision was made at the 38e RATS SCO meeting held here. Chaired by India, the meeting was attended by delegations from relevant authorities of India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Executive Committee of RATS SCO.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure Board will conduct a joint border operation with border service forces of relevant SCO member states. The operation was called “Solidarity-2023”
An agreement has been reached to hold the next meeting of the SCO RATS Council in Tashkent in March 2023.
India assumed the chairmanship of RATS SCO on October 28 for a period of one year. India has shown keen interest in deepening its security cooperation with the SCO and its regional counter-terrorism structure which deals with issues related to security and defence.
The chairmanship of the SCO RATS Council passed from India to Kazakhstan.
The agreement on the regional anti-terrorist structure as a permanent organ of the SCO was signed at a meeting of the Council of Heads of SCO Member States on June 7, 2002 in St. Petersburg. Since its establishment, the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (RATS) has made a significant contribution to the development of the Organization and has become its pillar and a coordination center for the fight against terrorism, separatism and regional and global extremism. .
Sources said the meeting yielded significant results as it reviewed the course of execution of previous RATS SCO Council decisions. Apart from this, the activities of the technical expert group of the competent authorities of the SCO Member States, the expert groups in the field of border cooperation and the fight against the use of the Internet for terrorists, extremists and separatists, have been approved.
Sources said decisions were also made on organizational and personnel support for the activities of the RATS SCO Executive Committee. “For their personal contribution to the development of the activities of SCO RATS and the strengthening of the interaction between the competent authorities of the SCO Member States, a number of employees of the competent authorities of the SCO Member States and civil servants of the SCO RATS Executive Committee were awarded the Council Diploma and the SCO RATS Commemorative Badge.
