Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka places himself strategically in line to succeed Azimio La Umoja presidential hopeful Raila Odinga in 2027.
Kalonzo, while speaking at a rally in Machakos county on Friday June 3, assured his supporters that he had already presented a plan to counter Raila’s running mate, Martha Karua of Narc Kenya, in the battle for succession once the former prime minister retires.
His position as chief minister, an equivalent of the post of prime minister, he said, would give him an advantage in the succession matrix if Raila won the August 9 election.
“We (Wiper) will not stop until we take over the presidency of Kenya. Since President Uhuru Kenyatta will retire and Mr. Odinga will become President and Martha Karua his Deputy, are you telling me that once Mr. Odinga retires, Martha should really become President?

“Don’t you think we just lined up properly to succeed Mr. Odinga? We are not kidding,” Kalonzo said.
The leader of Wiper asked residents to be assured that they would vote for him when they elected Raila to power.
Similar sentiments were expressed during his first rally with Raila on Thursday, June 2, with a number of pro-Azimio politicians branding him as the next president.
It was unclear whether the remarks were made to appease his ego or hinted at a future game plan.
The same idea was floated by political scientist Mutahi Ngunyi who has since aligned himself with the Azimio La Umoja brigade.
“When Raila was appointed Prime Minister, he made the post larger than life. Now that Kalonzo Musyoka has agreed to be chief minister, he should do the same.
“We must refer to him as the Right Honorable Chief Minister. Then later as the 6th President of Kenya. Well done big brother,” Ngunyi said.
It’s too early to dissect Kalonzo’s game plan but analysts believe his remarks could cause a storm at Azimio La Umoja, especially after Raila’s election. All indicators point to power sharing after August 9 as a test of the alliance’s resolve to stick together.

Nonetheless, Kalonzo assured Karua of his unwavering support and loyalty upon his return to Azimio.
“Ultimately, I want to congratulate my scholarly sister and senior attorney, Martha Karua, on her appointment as Vice President of Azimio La Umoja.”
“I want to assure Martha of my full and unequivocal support and that of Raila and Martha Karua’s ticket,” the former vice president said on June 2.
