IPL 2022: Brendon McCullum laments Kolkata Knight Riders hitters’ inability to counter Gujarat Titans’ short balls | Cricket News

MUMBAI: After a fourth straight loss in IPL 2022, this time an eight-point loss to Gujarat Titans at DY Patil Stadium, Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Brendon McCullum has regretted his batting’s inability to counter short balls from the team led by Hardik Pandya. , adding that the two-time champions will have to go back to the drawing board to counter such tactics.
After limiting Gujarat to 156/9, Kolkata were attacked by the pace quartet of Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Alzarri Joseph and Yash Dayal while Rashid Khan’s leg spin kept them on a leash. The consistent use of short balls, a pocket of weakness among many Kolkata hitters, led them to pick key wickets at crucial moments to win by eight runs and take the lead in the scoring chart.
“First and foremost, the Gujarat Titans bowling lineup is very well balanced. They have real pace, a bit of a bounce and some left arm variety as well. It’s a really good lineup of pace and when you throw Rashid Khan in there, it’s a really good bowling team.
“The way they played, I thought they were attacking us as we expected, which was further back and around the shoulder area. Unfortunately, we couldn’t counter that. We did a good job getting back in the game but too bad we lost another close one, they deserved to win,” McCullum said in the post-game virtual press conference.
McCullum conceded that Kolkata hitters will have to find solutions to tackle the short-ball scheme, especially against fast, quality pacers. “At the end of the day, the rebound can be your friend or your enemy depending on whether you are able to fight it. We have to find a way to be able to find it and come up with some technical things to try and use. the rhythm rather than go against him. Certainly, however, it was a very good bowling from Gujarat Titans. Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, they operated very smartly.
Andre Russell gave Kolkata a chance to win, taking the top score with 48, but his dismissal in the final dashed hopes of an unlikely win.
“We still gave ourselves a chance even though we weren’t quite able to execute. It’s also a fine line, there’s a lot of those kind of balls that could have easily called one (bouncer ) for the most, in which case it would have changed the way they were able to play against us. It’s also the nature of the game and credit goes to Gujarat as we again finished second in a close contest.
With the loss to Gujarat, Kolkata are currently seventh in the points standings with five losses and three wins. McCullum felt his team could still qualify for the tournament playoffs, citing a turnaround in the second half of the 2021 IPL that lifted them to second place in the United Arab Emirates.
“From our perspective, we’re developing a pattern of how teams attack us. So we can go out and work on that to be better next time around. But the confidence in our batting unit should stay relatively high. If we can cross the line in one of those close matches, it will do wonders for us.I still believe we are good enough to be in the semi-finals and be there in the big competition.
