GP member assaulted woman, counter-complaints registered at Hiriyadka police station
Udupi: A woman was assaulted by a member of Athradi Gram Panchayat as she tried to prevent the construction of a road on private land.
Arathi (45), a resident of Hiriyadka was injured and admitted to Udupi District Government Hospital.
The Athradi Gram Panchayat was working on the construction of a concrete road in the Patta area of Arathi despite opposition from the landowner. Arathi asked why the road works had started despite the family’s objection.
A complaint was filed at Hiriyadka police station stating that Ratnakar Shetty, a panchayat member present at the scene, and Chandrahasa Shetty, a neighbor assaulted Santhosh Pujari and Arathi. Also, during an argument between them, Ratnakar Shetty pushed Arathi who suffered a severe head injury. Arathi’s daughter who came to stop Ratnakar Shetty from molesting her mother was also molested by him. Aarti was admitted to Udupi District Hospital and is undergoing treatment.
Arathi’s neighbour, Chandrahas Shetty, also filed a complaint against Arathi because she had delivered the letter of no objection to the panchayat for the construction of the road. After receiving Arathi’s letter, the road construction works were sanctioned by the panchayat. When the road construction works started, Arathi and her husband came to the spot and objected to the execution of the works. She also assaulted the gram panchayat member.
Hiriyadka police have registered complaints from both sides and the investigation is ongoing.
