Biden: Voters must elect ‘pro-choice’ lawmakers to oppose Supreme Court on Roe

President Joe Biden says the Supreme Court has overturned Roe vs. Wade should motivate “voters to elect pro-choice leaders” in the midterm elections.

Biden’s comments come after a leaked draft opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito said the Supreme Court would side with Mississippi in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Case.

LEAKED DRAFT OPINION SIGNALS SUPREME COURT WILL VOID ROE V. WADE

Biden wrote in a statement Tuesday morning that he doesn’t know “whether this draft is genuine or whether it reflects the court’s final decision.”

“My administration has argued forcefully in court to defend Roe against Wade,” the president continued. “I believe a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for nearly fifty years, and the fundamental fairness and stability of our law demands that it not be overturned.”

He noted that following Texas’ adoption of SB 8, he directed his “Gender Policy Council and the Office of the White House Legal Counsel to prepare options for an administration response to the ongoing attack on abortion and reproductive rights, under a variety of possible outcomes in cases pending before the Supreme Court” and vowed “to be ready when a decision is rendered”.

“If the Court overturns Roe, it will be up to our country’s elected officials at all levels of government to protect women’s right to choose. And it will be up to voters to elect pro-choice leaders in November,” Biden concluded. “At the federal level, we will need more pro-choice senators and a pro-choice majority in the House to pass legislation codifying Roe, which I will work to pass and sign.”

Unlike a number of other leading Democrats, the White House did not offer an initial response to the leaked opinion Monday night.

“If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote. and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a joint statement. . “Republican-appointed judges reported votes to overturn Roe vs. Wade would become an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history.”

“Several of these conservative justices, who are in no way accountable to the American people, have lied to the United States Senate, torn up the Constitution, and tarnished both precedent and the reputation of the Supreme Court – all to the detriment of tens of millions of women who may soon be stripped of their bodily autonomy and constitutional rights upon which they have relied for half a century,” they continued. “The party of Lincoln and Eisenhower is now completely vested in Trump’s party.

The court’s decision, first reported in a draft notice leaked by Policy, will not be final until they are released during the summer semester and may change. It’s also unclear how Chief Justice John Roberts will vote.
